CabWriter users can leverage the power of third party plugins downloaded from the SketchUp Extension Warehouse to add more power and capability, such as productivity improvements, reporting, and photo realistic rendering to wow your clients. This is a great advantage in that there are thousands of extensions that have been written to add greater functionality to the basic environment, many of them free of charge. SketchUp has provided the ability to add functionality to the basic program through the use of extensions, such as CabWriter. Need a standard cabinet in your closet? No problem! The new closet tools can be used together with standard CabWriter cabinet drawing tools to create your client’s perfect closet. Designed to work hand in hand with CabWriter’s cabinet tools, it allows you to quickly and easily design closets in almost any configuration imaginable. Sold as an add on to CabWriter Pro, it provides a dedicated set of tools optimized for closet design. The most exciting new addition to the CabWriter family of tools is CabWriter Closet. With CabWriter 6, we’ve added new upper cabinet types, more label choices, support for horizontal hinge plates, new inset back options, and more. CabWriter offers native plywood and DXF optimization and many label printing options, but we are still fully compatible with Cutlist Plus fx if you want to take advantage of it’s additional capabilities. It’s more fun to play with and isn’t absolutely necessary unless you’re dying to know what the space will look like in reality. You also have to wait a couple of hours for each image to render. The software is incredibly powerful which also makes it pretty expensive. I used a free trial version of Indigo Renderer for the images you see. This is really helpful to see how light will work in a space. ![]() Within Sketchup you can easily assign different materials to various objects so that they appear realistic in the rendered image. One of the cool things about 3D models is that you can render them to create the photorealistic images. There are plenty of great tutorials on youtube from beginner to advanced that will guide you through the modeling process. They sent the model to me and I was able to modify it. The couple I’m designing for actually created their own basic Sketchup model based on the measurements of their kitchen. However, modeling in Sketchup is relatively easy especially if you’re just making basic shapes. ![]() Since I studied architecture in college, 3D modeling comes a lot more naturally to me than the average user. It will give you a better grasp of what the final result will be so you’re less likely to end up with any nasty surprises. I recommend doing some 3D modeling especially if you plan on doing a major renovation like a kitchen. ![]() ![]() You also have access to entire library of 3D models that you can easily drop into your model. It’s incredibly intuitive and best of all it’s free! I use Sketchup all the time to mock up furniture designs and room arrangements. I’ve recently been helping some friends design a new kitchen and Google Sketchup has been my goto 3D modeling program. After posting my kitchen renovation, I’ve been getting a lot of requests from people to do more kitchens.
